American historian who has written extensively on the interaction between Christianity and American culture, particularly American fundamentalism and Christianity in American higher education. He is best known for his Bancroft Prize-winning biography of the New England colonial clergyman Jonathan Edwards. He taught at Calvin College, Duke Divinity School, and the University of Notre Dame.
