Very fun! I definitely get why some people wouldn't like it, since it is so extremely of its genre, but I had a great time with it. The more tropey story writing or "juvenile" aspects in prose or dialogue make me giggle in delight rather than roll my eyes, which isn't going to be the case with every reader. I just happen to enjoy cheesiness and maybe have a more than fair affection for the YA stories I grew up reading.
Loved:
- Setting and worldbuilding. It's not mind-bendingly elaborate or anything, just a very exciting place for our characters to interact with. Also DRAGONS!
- The dynamics between characters; Enemies to lovers is my jam, dragon bonds/psychic links are always fun, and I enjoyed a lot of the side characters.
- Xaden appearing within the last few lines of a chapter and announcing his presence in the most dramatic way possible. It happens so so often, but you never see it coming because he has literally no reason to be there. Supremely silly, but also weirdly effective for tension.
Didn't love:
- The end. It felt like the author cared more about continuing a series than writing a satisfying story. Usually that wouldn't be a HUGE problem for me, but the specific way it was done here annoyed me pretty thoroughly. Relationship drama and miscommunication plots AFTER the main pair has already gotten together in some capacity is usually just very grating.
- While I enjoyed the romance a lot, I found the actual sex scenes to be pretty boring.
Recommend if:
- You read the excerpt on the back cover and it makes you grin like an idiot
- You want a light read/page turner where you don't really realize you're reading 498 pages
- You don't need your book to be 100% serious to be enjoyable
Might continue series. Ending makes me somewhat hesitant.
